The inspiration for this section comes from a challenge made by George Hay, a science fiction magazine editor in the 1970s, to Arthur C. Clarke (and others). The challenge was to write a short story that would fit on a postcard.
The challenge in postcard-writing is to tell a complete story, with a beginning, a middle, and a good ending, in exactly 250 words. It is an excellent exercise for a budding writer who tends to explain a scene rather than write one! I invite you to practice and send it to me, I would love to read it.
Below are samples of postcard stories I wrote as monthly exercises for Writers’ Ink.
